Computer Algebra System (CAS) calculators should not be used on any PAT Maths tests.
Some items in PAT Maths Adaptive feature an in-test calculator tool. These are items for which a calculator may be useful or, in fact, required to correctly respond. Standard scientific calculators may still be used for all levels if that is your school’s standard practice.
Students can familiarise themselves with the in-test calculator tool by completing one of the available practice tests.
At the lower test levels, PAT Maths Adaptive items assess students’ abilities to perform simple mathematical operations and should not require the use of a calculator.
PAT Adaptive test levels do not align directly with students' year levels. Depending on each student's testing pathway, they may see blocks of items (questions) at different levels throughout their test.
For a select number of items at levels 4 to 6, an online calculator tool within the test can be used by students, if they choose. The mathematical processes involved in these questions can be completed without the use of a calculator, but students who already feel confident using a calculator may benefit from using one as it will enable them to concentrate on the more complex cognitive aspects of the question.
At upper levels, PAT Maths Adaptive assesses the application of more advanced and complex mathematical processes for which the use of a calculator is appropriate and may in fact be required. The online calculator tool is available for all questions at levels 7 to 10.
PAT Maths Adaptive does not contain items specifically assessing students’ abilities to perform mathematical operations without a calculator. So, while it is possible for students to use the in-test calculator as an aid for items that do not feature the tool, this should not be cause for concern. The more significant element is whether the student has correctly performed the required operation.
